Roundy’s – Pick n’ Save just doesn’t get it…

Posted: March 9th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Uncategorized | 4 Comments »

I shop at Pick n’ Save and I bring along my own bags. I bought them at Sam’s club. They are very large, and generally my whole weekly trip fits in two bags. I usually get a credit of $0.05 per bag. It is was a nice bonus.

I was informed by a cashier last weekend that the credit will ONLY go to people using bags SOLD by Pick n’ Save with their logo on them. I can be “green” and be rewarded but only if I choose to use your bags? You don’t get it. I don’t do it for the nickle. I’m guessing most people aren’t doing it for the nickle either, but to say “You’re not worth supporting in your effort because you didn’t FUND our efforts ahead of time” is just dumb.

I figured maybe the cashier was wrong, so I emailed Roundy’s corporate. Here’s the response. (My emphasis)

Mr. Or Ms. Geiger,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Roundy’s with your inquiry regarding the Bag Recycling Credit.

Customers will receive a .05 Cent incentive to have their groceries packed in Roundy’s Reusable Bags. The bag refund only applies to Roundy’s Reusable Bags, not other retailers nor plastic bags, paper bags or cardboard totes.

If a Customer chooses to double their Roundy’s Reusable bags they will receive a single refund for each doubled bag. All stores will participate in the bag refund program.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Again, thank you for contacting Roundy’s. We appreciate your patronage.

I work at Pick N Save, and I don’t agree with this new policy at all. I have bags from other stores too (I am a bagger). I think it’s pretty stupid. I don’t do it for the nickel, I do it because it’s right for the Earth. However, I agree with you.

    Dear J. Geiger,

First, let me thank you for your feedback to our corporate office and on your blog regarding our reusable bag credit. We had many considerations in coming up with the “Doing Our Part” program we announced this week. However, we have heard from many customers, like you, who have long made a practice of shopping with reusable bags. All of you have asked if your reusable bags can be included in our new program, so we have expanded the program.

Under the “Doing Our Part” program, customers shopping with the following reusable bags are eligible for a 5-cent credit per bag used to pack your groceries:

    • All Roundy’s Reusable Bags
    • Similarly constructed reusable bags from other retailers or entities
    • Canvas Bags
    • Market Baskets

Again, we appreciate your feedback and hope you will continue to enjoy shopping in our stores.

    Thanks,

Vivian, maybe you can explain why all of our hours are being cut? or why Gary beats up everybody all the time and never has anything positive to say , but i am supposed to treat my people with respect. Don always says call me, we all know that is a joke. if we did call i am sure i would be history in a matter of months. i will be starting a blog under an alias so we can have a forum to list issues with upper management

At approximately 6:30 PM on Sunday, March 7, 2010, I was at the newly remodeled Pick & Save on 67th and National, West Allis, Wisconsin. As I wondered around the store, I noticed the wide aisles, I really liked that. What I didn’t like was finding all the discarded food containers & utensils customers left all over the store, on top of shelves and food. I picked many of them up intending on putting them in a trash can, only I couldn’t find even ONE throughout the store, unless I went into the rest room. I finally gave the garbage to a woman in the meat department who was kind enough to toss them out. My suggestion is this: If you’re going to have product samples given out, please put trash containers throughout your stores so garbage can be disposed of properly instead of on food you intend to sell. While I realize not everyone will be courteous, trash cans may help. I was also surprised at how empty the shelves were or the amount of trash was on the floors, especially in the fresh produce section. Periodioc floor clean ups would be appreciated also.Thanks.
